WHO EXACTLY IS RESPONSIBLE?
Fingers can be pointed at higher and lower powers in The United States, all the way from the country's government to individual Americans. The American government has been guilty in not granting undocumented citizens within America their rights and freedoms and although President Obama has promised to pass the Immigration Reform once elected for another term, the House GOP has failed in proceeding with the enactment of the bill. It has been 4 months as of January 2014 since the Senate passed a bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform bill with a favourable majority. (policymic) The only thing that's stopping it from becoming law is the House of Representatives.(policymic) Due to this, it has been a long and painful process which has caused many undocumented persons in America frustration. The federal government has promised an extensive immigration reform that will help more immigrants gain visas and green cards, and also Amnesty for the 11 million illegal immigrants.(TIME) And yet this issue is being considered as a second priority, because these people are "minorities". Secondly, some state governments are choosing to discriminate against these immigrants, and go against The Constitution by mistreating illegal immigrants and disregarding their rights. In 2010, in Arizona they proved just that by encouraging racial profiling and discrimination towards persons of a different race, especially Hispanics when they enacted laws SB 1070 and HB 2162. (nscl) These two laws
allowed police enforcement to demand proof of an individual’s legal status if
they had reasonable suspicion, and to arrest them without a warrant if they
fail to do so. (nscl) It also made it illegal for anyone to seek work in
Arizona if they’re an illegal. Arizona became one of the biggest states for deportation, and they still have these laws in effect to this day. Should laws such as this that are prejudicial and racist towards their citizens even be in effect to America? It is unjust to treat these persons as second class citizens, all because of a federal law that hasn't been passed in the White House. Thirdly, many employers of illegal immigrants choose not only discriminate against them, but also exploit them. Employers in various industries that require hard manual labour and an expansive labour force choose to make economical decisions that are both harmful for these workers' rights and well being. Employers swipe the information of their workers' legal status and validity under the rug, and often don't carefully inspect botched documents such as fake socially security cards and fake passports. Due to illegal immigrants' willingness to work, they are often overworked and underpaid by employers and are put into inhuman conditions all because employers choose to put profit before workers' rights first. If they speak out to the their employers about their inhumane conditions, they often face physical and immigration-related threats and can even be detained for deportation. (workplace fairness) This is an injustice because it is a violation in federal, state employment and labor laws, there is no reason as to why illegal workers should be treated ay different from other workers like this all because of their status in the country. Illegal Immigrants also face discrimination and racism from Americans because they are pinned as criminals and illegals for their illegal actions.
