THE VICTIMS
Today in America, many people are victims to discrimination and deportation, both of which more heavily impact illegal immigrants. Even <<illegal immigrant>>, a term used in political discourse and the government is truly racist and prejudicial. Illegal immigrants come to America in search of a better future and life. Instead, they are regarded as a burden on society by the rest of Americans and because of this, face great discrimination. It is proven that 61 percent of people said Hispanics face significant
discrimination, compared to other parties. (Huffingtonpost) In the workplace, Illegal immigrants are victims of unpaid wages, dangerous conditions, uncompensated workplace injuries, and other labor law violations. (workplace fairness) As with the story of Jose Ucelo Gonzalez, a worker in Garden Grove, San Jose finished his day's work of paving a parking lot and asked for his day's earnings. But instead of paying him, the local contractor called the police and falsely accused him of robbery. The charges were dropped thereafter, but he was still handed over to immigration enforcement agents.(mercury news) Not only are illegal immigrants faced with discrimination from they employers, they also face it with the government . In 1996, The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 was enacted, and it represented an effort by Congress to "strengthen and streamline U.S. immigration laws." (law cornell) Those that were in the United States illegally for more than six months became inadmissible for three years as soon they departed the United State, and if they were in the U.S. for more than a year they became inadmissible for ten years upon leaving the country. (lifted lamp) This was a great injustice to undocumented people, and it breached their fundamental rights. When U.N. had started to investigate into the matter, they called for a stop to the ill-treatment of these illegal immigrants, and said that they should be granted their fundamental rights. (examiner) they stated that local governments must protect not only undocumented workers' rights, but they should also be free from "arbitrary arrest or detention" and they should be able to "seek and enjoy asylum without persecution." (examiner) U.N. had also stated that: "Illegal aliens must also have economic, social and cultural rights, which include health, adequate housing, education and favourable conditions of work,” and judging by the massive deportation of these undocumented persons by states such as Arizona and Georgia, these persons aren't even granted those basic rights. Illegal immigrants being detained and deported have often committed no major crimes and they should qualify for President Obama’s nondeportation policies. Under those policies, the federal government has said it wants to focus its efforts on immigrants with major criminal records, leaving responsible, honest and dutiful citizens alone. (washingtontimes)
