WHAT IS BEING DONE
"There are going to be moments -- there are always moments like this in big efforts at reform -- where you meet resistance and the press will declare something dead, 'It's not going to happen,' but that can be overcome," The President of The United States of America, President Obama had said when he addressed the mass of supporters outside The White House pushing for a change in the immigration system. On May 2, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bill that outlines a plan for compressive immigration reform it passed with a 13-5 vote. (neon tommy) This was called the Immigration Reform Bill which political analysts predict will be in full swing by the end of 2014. (huffingtonpost) This bill has a series of requirements that the Government should put in effect in ten years. Firstly, To increase border security improvements to 90%, which would mean that less illegal immigrants will be crossing into the country. (politico) Secondly, to create a pathway to citizenship for the estimated 11 million people living in the U.S. illegally , as long as they meet all the requirements, such as not being convicted felons, they could obtain "registered provisional immigrant status" within the U.S. . (politico) Thirdly, the bill entails a new W visa which would allow up to 200,000 low-skilled workers a year into the country for jobs in construction, hospitality and other industries. (politico) This would solve the ongoing issue of many not being able to legally immigrate because they're not appealing in their job sector.(politico) Finally, new employment verification will be implemented that will ensure that employers electronically check their hires, and so they wouldn't be able to hire illegal immigrants.(politico) This new bill if passed by Congress will change the lives of many of the undocumented persons living in The United States. Many of the citizens who have deserved citizenship all along will eventually be granted it due to The Immigration Reform. Since the creation of the bill, there have been many other actions that followed up to protect the rights of illegal immigrants. Even the deportations have dropped to under 370,000 immigrants per year from 400,000. (huffingtonpost) There are even immediate actions taking place to grant these persons amnesty. There is a major GOP proposal for legalizing the status of undocumented immigrants, proposed by Representative Darell Issa from California, who plans to introduce a bill as early as January 2014 to give temporary legal status to undocumented immigrants for six years while they look for other ways of staying in the country. President Obama has also been in favour of passing the DREAM Act, an Act which would help undocumented students who have graduated pursue a secondary education. This will be possible by the financial aid provided by The U.S. government, who will also grant a pathway to citizenship for these young people in exchange for completing two years of higher education schooling or two years service in the military. Although Congress has yet to pass this act,The President has announced "deferred action" for many of the people that qualify for the DREAM act, allowing them to remain in the United States.
